WOLMARANSSTAD

The town lies in the valley of the Makwasiespruit, which takes it's name from the many wild spearmint bushes that grow along it's banks. Founded in 1891, the town became an important staging post on the old postal route between Johannesburg and Kimberley. The first Euro-peans in the Transvaal settled in this area in 1823, and it is claimed that the first white child to be born in the Transvaal was born here. Today the town serves a large maize-farming community, as well as serving as a buying centre for diamonds, which are mined on a considerable scale in the district.
