This town is situated approximately 60 km south of Bitterfontein on the road to Springbok. The small town is set amidst barren granite outcrops, characteristic of this area. Garies and it’s surroundings are famous for their colourful wild flowers during spring, and no less than 11 different scenic routes lead to town. Originally named after and founded on the farm Goede verwagting. The town’s present name is a Khoisan word meaning ‘couchgrass’, and was given by the former Cape premier John X Merriman.
